Fort Pickens
This historic fort is located on Santa Rosa Island in the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Fort Pickens is the largest of the four forts constructed to defend Pensacola Bay. The fort’s Jr. Ranger Camp teaches children to identify birds and plants, brings them on hiking trails, and lets them touch the tanks!

Head over to Historic Pensacola Village to tour some 19th-century properties filled with costumed staff that bring the history to life. These interpreters will guide you through various periods of local history and interact with the audience by performing reenactments and demonstrations.
Big Lagoon State Park
This 655-acre state park separates the mainland from Perdido Key and the Gulf. In Big Lagoon State Park’s saltwater marshes and pine flatwoods, you can see a variety of flora and fauna. The beaches and shallow bays also offer an excellent opportunity to observe and study wildlife.
Some popular activities here include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and crabbing. There are also ranger-guided tours available.
Footprints on the Sand Echo-Trail
Pensacola Beach is a great place to observe wildlife such as bottlenose dolphins, hermit crabs, cownose rays, loggerhead turtles, and laughing gulls. You can learn about the native marine flora and fauna along the Footprints in the Sand Eco-Trail. The trail features 30 educational signs that each explore a different ecological topic.
